Moila Shrine History

Moila Shrine Center began on December 1, 1887. We were the 45th Shrine Center to receive dispensation. The name "MOILA" means "Elevated to a higher Dignity and Honor". Ill. Walter Hilton was Moila's first Potentate and served four years. Only one other Potentate served more that one year, Alvih P. Clayton served eight years. He is also Moila's only Imperial Potentate. We purchased our current location in 1920 with our last track of land being bought in 1949. We are currently located on 103 acres in midtown St. Joseph Missouri, that is home to one of Northwest Missouri's finest Country Clubs. 18 Hole Championship Golf course, beautiful water park and great outdoor patio with a view of the golf course of an evening that is breath taking. In 1934 a three story brick building was erected at the cost of $65,000. The original obligation was paid in full in 1945. A new pool has now replaced the old one in 2003. In 1957, two floors were added to the north side of the building. In 1961, a third floor was added to the north side, making the present building 39,600 square feet. We have approximately 2,400 members. We also have great dinning facilities and a night club that is as nice as there is in the St. Joseph area. Please we encourage you and your family to take advantage of what Moila has to offer.  The Shrine of North America is an international fraternity of approximately 515,000 members throughout the United States, Mexico, Canada and Panama. The Shrine's official philanthropy is Shriners Hospitals for Children, a network of 22 hospitals that provide expert, no-cost orthopedic and burn care to children under 18. If you know a child Shriners Hospitals might be able to help, call us toll-free at 1-800-237-5055 (in the U.S.) or 1-800-361-7256 (in Canada).
